September 1988 brought about restyling and updating of the Countach to celebrate Lamborghini's 25th anniversary as an automaker. This car came to be known as the Anniversario and was, in the opinion of many, the most desirable version of the Countach. The car was launched in 1988 at the Formula One Grand Prix at Monza.
The Anniversario features about 500 subtle changes and improvements over the QV.
The bodywork was redesigned by designer Horacio Pagani, creator of the Pagani Zonda. The nose of the Countach was raised a little and received an updated front bumper. The US cars still had to have the ugly 5mph bumpers installed. The bumper of the Euro version was deffinitely more attractive and many US car had these installed after the cars passed inspection. The front spoiler was revised and incorporated air intakes on the side to direct air to the front brakes. A new rear bumper was also designed and the same one was used for both US and European models. The most noticable difference in the appearance of the Anniversario was in the radiator air intakes directly behind the doors. The strakes on these were changed to thicker vertical lines and appeared in body color updating the black slats of previous models.
Less visibly under the skin the chassis received much updating for improved handling. The chassis was developed on the road extensively by none other than 3 time World Rally Driving Champion Sandro Munari.
The interior also received modifications. The door panels were mildly restyled and the window cranks disappeared in favor of electric window lifts. The seats were changed taking on a very American appearance. They were more comfortable and had power reclining seatbacks. The steering wheel was replaced and a new more powerfull air conditioner was installed. new more powerful Sound insulation was also added.
The Anniversario was given new 2 piece forged alloy OZ rims. These were shod with Pirelli's new P Zero tires with asymetrical design and use of two rubber compounds across their width.
The engine of the car went untouched from the QV though reliability was improved. A carbed Euro version was still available as was fuel injection for the USA. Each version can be easily recognised by it's distinctive engine cover. The engine bay was tidied up by rearranging hoses and wires for improved appearance and easier servicing.
The price for the Anniversario increased too.
The Anniversary is now widely regarded as the best roadgoing Countach in terms of handling & reliability. Former World Formula One Driving Champion Mario Andretti bought one new.
3 were built in Anniversario Argento (Anniversary Silver), one for the USA (#KLA12960), one for England (#KLA12670) and one (#KLA12085) kept by the Factory in its Museum.
Possibly only 25 cars were built in 1990.
