If you’ve never had the misfortune to suffer from a broken bone I’ll tell you right here and now that the healing and recovery process is much harder and more painful the older you get. As many of you already know for the past 2 months I’ve been off work from my regular day job because of a broken thumb. The time off has given me much time to think as I fumble along single handedly dealing with tasks I use to take for granted, like shifting gears “wrong handed” in what is already an automatic SUV and wishing very much that it had paddle shifters. The thumb, after all, isn’t necessarily needed for steering or for shifting with paddles but does figure in a major way when using a stick shift making the task more difficult and painful than I had once imagined.
I have driven a couple of versions of egear equipped Gallardos over the years and while the first time proved to be awkward and clumsy, subsequent attempts improved to the point where I actually enjoyed the experience, especially in stop and go traffic where I could take advantage of the optional automatic mode making me wish this was available in some of the older models as well. For those who disagree my feeling is that some owners might be less accepting of change and new experiences as they grow older than I am. And while Lamborghini are no longer offering an optional manual gearbox on any of the current models I am sure that delivery of a large enough bag of cash might possibly convince them to equip your next purchase with something more to your liking even if it is a throwback to the days of 3 pedals and yet another resting place for your right hand.
But if the factory refuse your request and you really like old school tech then why not just go out and buy one of any number of classic Lamborghinis coming up for auction during the next few months and drive it like it was mean to be driven all the while enjoying the experience your way. I for one will just sit here dreaming up ways I can shoehorn a semi-automatic into a Jalpa to get the best of both worlds.
Stay tuned...
