P350 Jalpa (420 Made 1982-88)
The Jalpa (pronounced "YAWL-pa"), named for another breed of fighting bull, was introduced at the 1981 Geneva show though the first production models didn't go on sale until 1982. The Geneva show car, built on a Silhouette chassis was finished in bright orange with a striped orange and cream leather interior.
The first Jalpa housed the 3 litre engine of the Silhouette and not the 3.5 litre the production model. The production engine had an increased stroke of 75mm giving an overall displacement of 3485cc. Power increased to 255bhp at 7000rpm with a peak torque of 231 lbft at 3500rpm.
The Jalpa was really an updating of the Silouette styling with more pronounced moulded fender flares with a revised engine lid that gave it more of a hunchback appearance. The overall visual effect was a more muscular appearance.
To set off its modified shape, the Jalpa's Pirelli P7 tires received new 16x7.5" Campagnolo wheels.
The dash from the Silhouette was completely changed to a more modern block style arrangement. It was definitely an improvement and it ave the car's interior a look all its own. Leather seats and upholstery, air conditioning, AM/FM cassette stereo, electric window lifts and an electrically controlled driver's side mirror completed the ammenities.
Luggage space was quite ample at 8 cubic feet in such a small car, certainly enough for the two passengers it could carry on a weekend away. Price as listed in 1983 was $58,000 US and by the end of its production run in 1988 had risen to $65,000 US. Only 410 Jalpas were built during its production life, just enough to keep values at a reasonable level to make a used example a good investment in spite of its V8. Just 35 of these were built as RHD.
