400GT Interim (23 Made 1965-66)
The 400GT, not to be confused with the 400 GT 2+2, became available as an option in 1965. This was basically a 350GT with a much larger 4 litre engine installed. The 400GT came equipped with the later Islero steering wheel.
The previous 3.5 litre engine had its stroke enlarged from 77 to 82mm thus increasing overall displacement to 3929cc or 4 litres. An increase in comression from 9.5 to 10.2:1 brought horepower up to 320bhp at 6500rpm and a new torque rating of 276 lbft at 4500rpm.
Just 23 of these cars were built with this engine. 20 of these were produced in heavier steel and only 3 were skinned in aluminum. These three would no doubt be the more desirable due to their lighter weight in combination with the larger more powerful engine.
The sticker price for a 400GT was $14,250 in the US. The US cars came with four round sealed beam headlights and small bumper overriders, a foregleam of changes to come in the 400GT 2+2.
